Lee Falk föddes som Leon Harrison Gross den 28:e april 1911 i St. Louis, Missouri som son till Eleanor Alina och Benjamin Gross. Benjamin Gross avled några år senare, och Eleanor gifte om sig med Albert Falk Epstein. Han tog sig namnet Lee Falk efter college. Lee hade länge varit hans smeknamn, och både han och brodern Leslie tog sig samtidigt efternamnet Falk efter styvfadern Albert.

Redan vid 19 års ålder skapade Lee Falk serien om magikern Mandrake. Han sålde in sin idé till det stora seriesyndikatet King Features Syndicate i New York. Han insåg dock att han inte skulle klara av att både skriva och teckna serien och rekryterade därför tecknaren Phil Davis. Efter en tid av förberedelser debuterade Mandrake i amerikanska dagstidningar den 11:e juni 1934.

Ursprungligen hade Mandrake riktiga magiska krafter – om han förvandlade en skurk till en råtta, så blev personen verkligen en råtta! Men Falk insåg att för stora krafter begränsade serien, och ändrade den så att Mandrakes enda superkraft är att med sin blick och en gest omedelbart kunna sätta personer i djup hypnotisk trans. Den hypnotiserade skurken tror sig bli förvandlad till en råtta, men är det inte på riktigt.

Eftersom Mandrakes krafter är övernaturliga, så kan han betraktas som en superhjälte, kanske rent av den allra första.

Till sin hjälp har Mandrake alltid haft Lothar, en otroligt stark afrikansk prins. När serien debuterade på 1930-talet, fanns det knappt några andra färgade huvudpersoner på seriesidorna. Lothar var dock länge ociviliserad, men moderniserades gradvis och gick från att vara Mandrakes betjänt till att bli hans närmaste vän.

Efter Mandrake skapade Lee Falk den serie som han skulle bli mest känd för – Fantomen. Tillsammans med tecknaren Ray Moore, som tidigare assisterat Phil Davis på Mandrake, presenterade han en mystisk förklädd brottsbekämpare från en exotisk djungel. Fantomen debuterade den 17:e februari 1936, och firar 75-årsjubileum i år.

På några få år hade Falk alltså skapat en hjälte med övernaturliga krafter (Mandrake) och en maskerad hjälte med åtsittande dräkt och mask som inte visar ögonen (Fantomen) – koncept som blivit stilbildande för efterföljande superhjälteserier.

Efterhand utvecklades Fantomenserien och legenden bakom figuren växte. På sin faders mördares dödskalle svor han en ed att bekämpa sjöröveri, girighet, grymhet och orättvisor i alla dess former, och inte nog med det – hans ättlingar skulle följa i hans fotspår. På så vis uppstod myten om Fantomens odödlighet. Den nuvarande Fantomen är den 21:e i raden av brottsbekämpare som har följt dödskalleeden.

Fantomen har sitt tillhåll i Dödskallegrottan i De Djupa Skogarna, där han bor tillsammans med Bandarerna, den pygméstam som räddade livet på den blivande förste Fantomen. Till sin hjälp har han hästen Hero och vargen Devil. På sin högra hand bär han en dödskallering som efterlämnar ett märke på hakan på de skurkar som kommer i Fantomens väg. På sin vänstra hand har han det goda märket, som han ger till de personer som förtjänar Fantomens beskydd.

Trots den skrämmande framtoning som Fantomen har för skurkar, så är han en godhjärtad och glad person under masken. Fantomen har aldrig dödat någon skurk, och familjelivet med hustrun Diana och barnen Kit och Heloise har varit en stor del av serien. För Lee Falk var det viktigt att hans hjältar verkligen var goda förebilder också.

På 1960- och 70-talen, när hans serier hade som störst spridning i världen, betraktades Lee Falk som en av världens mest lästa författare. Ungefär 100 miljoner kunde dagligen ta del av hans serier på 40 olika språk. Han arbetade alltid med fyra olika äventyr parallellt, eftersom dagstidningarna publicerade olika följetonger med Mandrake och Fantomen på vardagar respektive söndagar.

Lee Falk skrev manus till sina serier fram till sin död den 13 mars 1999, den sista tiden från sjukhuset. Mandrake och Fantomen är de serier som producerats längst av sin skapare, 65 respektive 63 år.

Boken om Lee Falk

Bokprojektet till Lee Falks ära påbörjades 17:e februari 2011 – dagen då Fantomenserien firade 75-årsjubileum! På denna dag beslutade The Scandinavian Chapter of the Lee Falk Memorial Bengali Explorer’s Club att en klubb med vårt namn och syfte måste göra något för att uppmärksamma Lees 100-årsdag. Eftersom fjolårets bok med anledning av Fantomentidningens 60-årsjubileum blev en succé, beslutade vi att göra ett nytt bokprojekt.

Med hjälp från Lees familj, vänner och fans, sammanställer vi en bok för att hedra den legendariske historieberättaren. Boken kommer att innehålla artiklar om Lee och hans arbete, minnen från familj och vänner, en samling intervjuer med Lee, samt foton, illustrationer från serier, och bidrag skrivna av Lee Falk själv.

Eftersom det är kort tid för att producera och ge ut denna bok under året då Lee Falk firar 100-årsjubileum och Fantomen 75-årsjubileum, är inte målet att detta ska bli den definitiva boken om Lee Falk – men den kommer att bli en bra utgångspunkt, och långt mer än allt som gjorts fram till nu.

Scandinavian Chapter kommer att ge ut den svenska versionen av boken på bokmässan i Göteborg som hålls 22–25 september 2011. En engelsk version ges ut samtidigt.

Lee Falk 100 years

Lee Falk was born Leon Harrison Gross on April 28, 1911 in St. Louis, Missouri to Eleanor Alina and Benjamin Gross. Benjamin Gross died a few years later, and Eleanor remarried to Albert Falk Epstein.

He took the name Lee Falk after college. Lee had long been his nickname, and both he and his brother Leslie took the last name Falk around the same time, after their stepfather.

At the age of 19, Lee Falk created the comic strip Mandrake the Magician. He sold his idea to King Features Syndicate in New York. After realizing that he would not be able to both write and draw the strip, he recruited the artist Phil Davis. After a time of preparations, Mandrake first appeared in US newspapers on June 11, 1934.

Originally, Mandrake had real magic powers – if he turned a villain into a rat, the person actually became a rat! But Falk realised that too big powers limited the comic strip, and changed it so Mandrake’s only super power is the ability to use his look and a gesture to instantly put persons in a deep hypnotic trance.The hypnotized villain believes he is transformed into a rat, but that isn’t what actually happends.

Since Mandrake’s powers are supernatural, he can be considered a super hero, perhaps even the very first.

Mandrake has always had help from Lothar, an incredibly strong African prince. When the comic debuted in the 1930s, there were hardly any other colored main characters on the comic pages. Lothar was for a long time uncivilized, but was modernized gradually and evolved from being Mandrake’s servant to becoming his closest friend.

After Mandrake, Lee Falk created the comic strip for which he would become most famous – The Phantom. With artist Ray Moore, who previously assisted Phil Davis on Mandrake, he presented a mysterious masked crime fighter from an exotic jungle. The Phantom first appeared on February 17, 1936 and celebrates 75 years this year.

In a few years, Falk had created a hero with superhuman powers (Mandrake) and a masked hero with a tight costume and a mask that did not show his eyes (The Phantom) – concepts that have become standards for the super hero comics that appeared later on.

As time went by, the Phantom comic strip evolved and the legend behind the character grew. At the skull of his father’s murder he swore an oath to fight piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice in all its forms, and that was not all – his decendants would follow in his footsteps. That created the myth of The Phantom’s immortality. The current Phantom is the 21st in the line of crime fighters that have sworn the Oath of the Skull.

The Phantom operates out of The Skull Cave in the Deep Woods, where he lives with the Bandars, the pygmy tribe that saved the life of The First Phantom. He is also aided by his horse Hero and wolf Devil. On his right hand he wears a Skull ring that leaves a mark on the chin of villains that come in his way. On his right hand, closest to the heart, he wears a ring with the Good mark. He gives the Good mark to people who deserve The Phantom’s protection.

Despite the frightening image that The Phantom has to villains, he is a good-hearted and happy person beneath the mask. The Phantom has never killed a villain, and the family life with his wife Diana and children Kit and Heloise has been a big part of the comic strip. For Lee Falk, it was also important that his were good role models.

In the 1960s and 1970s, when his comic strips were at the peak of their distribution, Lee Falk was considered one of the world’s most read writers. An estimated 100 million people could read his comics every day in 40 different languages. He was constantly working on four storylines simultaneously, since the newspapers published different Mandrake and Phantom stories on weekdays and Sundays, respectively.

Lee Falk wrote the scripts to his comics until his death on March 13, 1999 – in the last days from the hospital. Mandrake and The Phantom are the comic strips that have been produced the longest by their original creator, at 65 and 63 years respectively.

The Book about Lee Falk

The Lee Falk book project began on February 17th, 2011 – the very day of the 75th Anniversary of the Phantom strip!

At that day, The Scandinavian Chapter of the Lee Falk Memorial Bengali Explorer’s Club decided that a club with our name and purpose had to do something in honor of the Lee’s centennial. Inspired by the success of last year's book in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Swedish Fantomen comic book, it was decided that we should do another book project.

With help from Lee’s family, friends, and fans, we are putting together a book in honor of the legendary storyteller. The book will contain articles about Lee and his works, recollections from family and friends, and a collection of interviews with Lee, along with photos, comic art, and writings by Lee Falk himself.

As time is short to produce and publish this book during the year of Lee's centennial and the Phantom’s 75th anniversary, the aim is not to produce the definitive book on Lee Falk – but our book will certainly be a good place to start, and far ahead of what has been done until now.

The Scandinavian Chapter intends to release both the Swedish and English version of this book at the Gothenburg Book Fair on September 22–25, 2011.
